Abstract

Early series of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair using arthrotomy led to promising short-term results. However, mid- to long-term follow-up demonstrated disappointing results. In consequence, primary ACL repair was mostly abandoned and ACL reconstruction became a current standard of treatment. However, this treatment does not perfectly restore kinematics of the knee joint and has not been shown to prevent the development of degenerative cartilage changes of the knee joint. Recently, primary repair of the ACL has received renewed interest recently. This article reviewed current indications, surgical technique, and clinical outcomes after primary ACL repair.
